Orchids are gorgeous perennial flowers with evergreen foliage that can decorate any home. However, they need proper care to bloom brightly.

One of the secrets of successful orchid cultivation is the use of a natural fertilizer made from coffee grounds. Coffee grounds contain important nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium.

Nitrogen promotes cell growth, phosphorus improves photosynthesis, and potassium ensures overall healthy plant growth. These components make coffee grounds an excellent fertilizer for orchids, which helps them bloom again and become more resistant to disease, experts say.

How to make liquid fertilizer from coffee grounds?

Collect the coffee grounds after making coffee. Mix it with two liters of water in a container. Leave the mixture in a cool place for 24-48 hours. Strain the solution and use it to water your orchids.

How and when do I fertilize orchids?

In the spring, when buds appear, fertilize orchids every 21 days. In summer, orchids need fertilizer every week. In winter, stop fertilizing as the plants are dormant.

In addition to liquid fertilizer, you can improve your orchid soil by mixing ¼ coffee grounds with ¾ garden soil. This will help provide the plant with nutrients for continued growth.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not use coffee grounds for plants affected by aphids or mealybugs, as this can make the situation worse.
  • Do not fertilize young orchids with coffee grounds, as this can slow their growth.
  • Be sure to dry the coffee grounds before adding them to the substrate to avoid mold growth.
