Frequency of watering
Strawberries need regular watering, because due to a lack of moisture, the berries become smaller and their number on the bush is significantly reduced. It is especially important to water the plant during flowering and fruiting, but it should be done wisely.
The root system of strawberries is located close to the soil surface, so dry wind and the scorching sun quickly dry this layer. Therefore, during flowering and for the first 2-3 weeks after it ends, the bushes should be watered weekly.
If the strawberries grow on natural mulch or under agrofibre, they can be watered once every 10 days in dry weather. Agrofibers and mulch retain moisture, so you won't need to water them abundantly. In rainy weather, you can skip watering altogether.
How to properly water strawberries:
- Do not water strawberries by sprinkling. Water should be poured directly under the root, methodically and abundantly.
- After the berries are set, abundant watering is only necessary in case of severe drought. Excessive moisture can lead to rotting of unripe berries. The rest of the time, strawberries are watered as the soil dries.
- Use water with a temperature above +15°C for irrigation. It is better to use settled water, but never cold.
After harvesting, strawberries also need to be watered, because they use their energy to form tendrils. You can water less often, but you should also focus on the soil condition and weather.
