Do you really need to wash meat and eggs before cooking: the experts' answer

It is widely known that to ensure food safety, certain foods, including fruits and vegetables, need to be washed before being consumed. However, not everyone knows whether it is really necessary to wash meat and eggs before cooking them.
Infectious disease specialists have expressed their opinion on this, Ukr.Media writes.
Is it necessary to wash meat before cooking?
Although some people consider it necessary to rinse meat to cleanse it of germs, experts say that it is impossible to completely remove bacteria with water. Instead, they advise focusing on proper heat treatment, especially when it comes to pork or chicken.
It's important to remember that when you rinse meat, germs can spread to kitchen utensils and other surfaces, increasing the risk of cross-contamination. However, you can soak the meat in water for 15-20 minutes before cooking to wash away surface contaminants. In addition, when cooking soups, it is better to drain the first broth and pour fresh water over the meat for additional cleaning.
Is it necessary to wash eggs before cooking?
It is recommended to wash eggs immediately before using them using warm water and soap. It should be noted that washing eggs in advance can lead to the formation of microcracks on their surface, which creates conditions for bacteria to penetrate inside.
