Mushrooms are a common ingredient that can add depth and richness of flavor to any dish. However, many people don't know how to properly clean and prepare them.

Do you need to clean mushrooms? Should you rinse them? Experts say that it all depends on the type of mushrooms you are using.

Certified chef Fred Thiess told Southern Living that mushrooms grown on a log or wood shavings (such as shiitake) do not need to be washed.

Cut off the bottom of the stem, wipe them with a paper towel. For commercially grown porcini mushrooms, wipe them with a dry paper towel. If the mushrooms are dirty, rinse them quickly with cold water, drain, chop, and cook immediately.

Chef Thiess recommends washing mushrooms with cold water and peeling them only before use. Sliced raw mushrooms that are rinsed will absorb more water, so it is recommended to rinse them whole. When sautéing mushrooms, do not put them all in the pan at once to prevent them from becoming a "soup." Cook the mushrooms in small portions so that they caramelize and have a deeper flavor.

It is important to buy wild mushrooms from qualified suppliers to make sure they are safe to eat.
