An incredible discovery in the Pacific Ocean: scientists have filmed a creature that has been living on Earth since the time of the dinosaurs (video)
The research vessel E/V Nautilus made a unique discovery in the depths of the Pacific Ocean. Scientists managed to capture on video the Palau nautilus, a creature that has existed on our planet since the dinosaur era and has hardly changed for millions of years.
For the first time in 15 years of research, Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) specialists came across this unique creature near the island of Palau. This was reported by the Express.
"Being on the ship during our first encounter with this animal was just incredible," said video engineer Jacob Ottaviani.
Palau nautilus is a cephalopod, a close relative of octopus and squid. It is distinguished by its unique spiral shell with several gas-filled chambers that allow it to regulate buoyancy. This species is called a "living fossil" because it has remained almost unchanged for millions of years.
Palau nautilus usually live at depths of 20 to 100 meters, choosing to hide among rocks and corals. They are most active at night, when they rise to shallow water in search of food.
"It's fascinating to meet an animal whose body structure and behavior have hardly changed since the time of the dinosaurs," said expedition leader Samantha Wishnak. This discovery gives scientists the opportunity to explore the evolution of life on the planet in greater depth and contributes to the conservation of rare species.
