In Italy, archaeologists found a 2700-year-old necropolis: tombstones show clear gender differences (photo)

In Italy, near the town of Amorosi, 48 kilometers from Naples, archaeologists have discovered an Iron Age necropolis. This burial site, which is approximately 2,800 years old, has become a valuable find, as it is the same age as Rome, which was founded about 161 kilometers away.

The necropolis was discovered during an archaeological survey before the construction of the power plant. Thanks to this discovery, scientists will be able to learn more about the cultures that existed in the region before Roman rule, Live Science reports.

So far, 88 pit burials have been excavated. They found weapons that accompanied men, as well as bronze jewelry (bracelets, pendants, brooches-fibulae) and pottery (vases) in women's burials.

In addition to the pit burials, the necropolis has two mounds with a diameter of 15 meters. Scientists believe that they could have been intended for representatives of the elite of ancient society.

This necropolis was born hundreds of years before the Samnites, who were considered one of the enemies of the first Romans, settled in these lands.

According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus in 753 BC. However, historians believe that the city appeared as a result of the unification of several villages in the 10th century BC.

In the fourth century BC, Rome fought with the Samnites but eventually won. The Samnites assimilated into Roman society after the Third Samnite War (298 BC - 290 AD).
