Caused a climate anomaly in 1831: scientists discover a unique volcano
The cause of the large-scale climate catastrophe of 1831 was the eruption of the Zavaritsky volcano on the Kuril Islands

Scientists from the University of St. Andrews have found that the cause of the large-scale climate catastrophe of 1831 was the eruption of the Zavaritsky volcano in the Kuril Islands. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, confirmed this by analyzing microscopic ash particles from polar ice cores.

Using a new technology for chemical analysis of samples the size of a tenth of the diameter of a human hair, scientists were able to accurately date the eruption to the spring and summer of 1831. Comparison of the chemical composition of ash from the cores with samples of world volcanoes pointed to Zavarytsky as the source of the cataclysm. The Independent writes about it.

The consequences of the eruption were catastrophic: a global cooling of 1 degree caused massive crop failures and famine. Historical records show abnormal weather conditions, frequent storms and floods around the world. Before this discovery, scientists had been debating the location of the volcano for years, considering options from the Philippines to Sicily.

Earlier, we told you that a man discovered the remains of an Ice Age mastodon near his home.
