In the municipality of Glottertal, located in the Black Forest mountains of Germany, more than 1500 silver coins were discovered during construction work. This treasure is one of the largest in recent decades in the Freiburg region.
According to Live Science, the builders noticed "small metal plates" during the work. They later learned that they had unearthed more than 1500 medieval coins.

An archaeologist from the State Office for the Protection of Monuments in Stuttgart told the publication that this discovery "is the largest treasure since 1949" in the region.

He said the find provides clues to scientists about what mining and minting in the area looked like 650 years ago.
He recalled that in 1949, archaeologists in Freiburg found about 5,000 coins from around the 1280s, but had never found medieval treasures.
Freiburg was founded by the House of Zeringen, a dynasty ruled by dukes from about 1120 to 1218. When the Zeringer line came to an end, the House of Urach took over the city.
"Glotterthal was one of the most important mining areas for the Dukes of Freiburg. The place where the coins were found was the main settlement of miners," who dug up metals such as silver," Haasis-Berner explained.
