Red onions have a pungent, sour taste. It has a dense, crunchy texture. It is best suited for salads, sandwiches, and burgers. It is not recommended for prolonged cooking as it spoils quickly.
How to choose onions:
- Yellow onions: look for firm, dry-skinned bulbs.
- White onions: choose small, thin-skinned bulbs.
- Red onions: look for firm, bright purple skin onions.
Yellow onions can be stored for up to several months in a cool, dry place. White onions have a shorter shelf life and are best consumed within 1-2 weeks. Red onions also have a shorter shelf life and are best consumed within 1-2 weeks.
