Signs of mold infection:

  • Musty smell of clothes after washing.

How to get rid of mold in a washing machine without chemicals:

You will need gloves, a sponge, baking soda, and vinegar.

Sprinkle a tablespoon of baking soda on the moldy areas. Dilute the white vinegar with water in a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle. If desired, add a few drops of essential oil. Spray the liquid on the affected areas and leave it on for several hours. Wipe the rubber of the washing machine with a brush or the hard side of a sponge. Wipe the area dry. Open the door of the washing machine and let it dry. Run a quick rinse cycle with no laundry to remove any remaining mold and vinegar odor.

To prevent mold from forming in the machine, always leave the door of the washing machine open after washing to allow it to ventilate. Clean the detergent dispensers regularly. Use high temperature programs (60°C or more) for washing. Do not overload the machine. Remove the washed clothes from the washing machine on time. Run an empty wash cycle with vinegar or citric acid once a month.
