How to fertilize tomatoes to grow big and sweet

Fertilization plays an important role in the overall health and vitality of the tomato plant. In addition, at harvest time, it helps to produce a bountiful harvest.

Although there are many fertilizers on the market designed for tomatoes, gardeners can try household products. Experts say that tomatoes are very fond of coffee grounds, according to Express.co.uk.

The main reason for this idea that coffee grounds can help fertilize your tomato plants is that tomato plants thrive in slightly acidic soil. Coffee grounds contain about two percent nitrogen, as well as varying amounts of phosphorus and potassium, which are very important for tomato growth.

Take about one cup of used coffee grounds, scattering them around the base of the tomato plant, and work them into the topsoil. This will help the coffee grounds break down and start releasing nutrients into the soil.

Gardeners can also prepare an infusion by adding two cups of used coffee grounds to a five-gallon bucket of water. Let the solution steep for several hours or overnight and then use it as a liquid fertilizer.
