In Spain, archaeologists have made an important discovery: during excavations in the city of Ubrique, they discovered the ancient Roman forum of Ocuri and adjacent buildings that played a key role in integrating the local population into the Roman Empire.

A team of scientists and volunteers from the University of Granada came across a wall that probably surrounded the central square of the forum. Its dimensions are impressive: one meter high and 16 meters long. Behind it were found the remains of large-scale public buildings from the heyday of the empire (I-V centuries AD). This was reported by the Independent.

The findings refuted previous theories that Roman buildings functioned only until the third century. The coins show that life here was in full swing at least until the end of the fourth century. Of particular value is the coin with the Christogram, the oldest Christian symbol in the region.

The finds also include a monumental altar, the remains of columns, pedestals for statues and other architectural elements. In addition, a medieval defense structure was discovered, which was probably part of a system of visual communication between the fortifications of the region.

These archaeological discoveries shed light on Roman trade routes in the Gibraltar area and help to better understand the process of Roman colonization of the southern Iberian Peninsula. The forum, which was the center of public life, played an important role in the cultural assimilation of local communities into the Roman Empire.
