It will sprout twice as fast: gardeners gave advice on how to accelerate seedling growth

Olena Ulianych, Head of the Department of Vegetable Growing at the Uman National University of Horticulture, shared her knowledge and experience in growing seedlings. She advised to pay attention to some factors that affect seedling growth. In addition, some methods can be used to speed up its germination.

Climatic features of the region:

It is important to take into account the climate of your area to correctly calculate the time of sowing seeds and planting seedlings in open ground. Do not risk planting seedlings if there is a chance of frost.

The cassette method:

Olena Ulianych recommends using the cassette method of growing seedlings. This saves seeds because each plant has a clearly defined place, and also makes it easier to transplant into the open ground. The root system of the seedlings remains intact, which contributes to better survival and faster development.

Advantages of the cassette method:

• Reduces seed consumption by six times.
• Plants easily adapt to new conditions when transplanted.
• The growing season lasts continuously.
• The root system remains intact.

Transplanting seedlings:

Before planting seedlings in open ground, it is important to harden them. This is done by exposing the cassettes to fresh air for a day.

Soaking seeds:

There are many ways to soak seeds before sowing. Olena Ulianych recommends using:

• Boiled water at room temperature: the easiest and most affordable method.
• Potassium permanganate solution: it disinfects the seed (1% solution for 20 minutes).
• Wood ash solution: additionally nourishes the seeds (1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water, soak for 1 hour).

Tips for growing seedlings:

• Use high-quality seeds from trusted manufacturers.
• Provide the seedlings with enough light and heat.
• Water the seedlings regularly, but do not allow waterlogging.
• Feed the seedlings with mineral and organic fertilizers.
• Dive the seedlings on time (transplant them into larger containers).
