University of California professor Ken McDonald said that the African continent is splitting faster than previously thought. His words became a real scientific sensation.

Scientists focused on a huge 56.5 kilometer long crack that was first recorded in 2005. They found that the fault expands by 1.5 centimeters every year. This was reported by the Daily Mail.

According to the latest estimates, the complete separation of the continent could occur within 1-5 million years, which is much faster than earlier forecasts that predicted this process would take tens of millions of years.

"There is a possibility that the waters of the Indian Ocean will break through the formed rift, flooding the area of the modern East African Rift Valley," warns Professor MacDonald.

Geology experts say that this process will lead to the emergence of a new continent on the world map. Moreover, the resulting water space may turn into an ocean whose depth will be comparable to the Atlantic.
