How to clean cast iron grates on the stove: an effective method without the use of chemicals

A cast-iron grill is not only a convenient and practical element of the stove, but also a real durable item that can serve you for many years. However, like any item in the kitchen, it needs proper care. This is what Obozrevatel writes about.
What should not be used to clean a cast iron grill?
Cast iron is a rather sensitive material that does not like aggressive cleaning methods. Therefore, when caring for cast iron grills, it is important to avoid:
- Abrasives: Hard brushes and powders can damage the surface of cast iron.
- Acids: Vinegar and other acidic products can cause corrosion.
- Chlorine and other aggressive bleaches: These substances can damage the protective layer of cast iron.
- Excessively hot water: Sudden temperature changes can cause the grill to deform.
Remember: Cast iron is prone to rust, so it is not recommended to keep it in water for a long time. Do not soak the grill for longer than 10 minutes and do not wash it in the dishwasher.
How to clean a cast iron grill:
- Cool the grill. Do not try to clean it while it is hot, as this can cause burns.
- Prepare the solution. Fill a sink or basin with warm water and a few drops of dishwashing detergent.
- Soak the grate. Immerse the grill in the solution for 5-10 minutes.
- Clean the grill. Use a soft brush or sponge to remove dirt. Do not use abrasive products or hard sponges!
- Rinse and dry. Rinse the grill thoroughly under running water and dry it with a towel. Do not leave the grill wet, as this can lead to rust.
Tip: If rust appears on the grill, use a soft metal sponge to remove it. But choose the thinnest possible to avoid damaging the cast iron.
How to protect the cast iron grill from dirt:
To make your cast iron grill last longer and not require frequent cleaning, you can calcine it with oil in the oven. To do this:
- Coat the entire surface of the grill with a thin layer of refined vegetable oil.
- Put the grill in an oven preheated to 170-200°C for 30-60 minutes.
- This will create a protective layer on the surface of the grill that will repel dirt and make it easier to clean.
