Why soak strawberries in wine: a strange but effective life hack from Mexico

The strawberry season is in full swing, so you should know how to properly wash the berries and how much to eat to avoid harming your body.
On his website, travel blogger jerryjamesstone shared 17 ways to wash and store strawberries that he has collected in different countries.
The expert noted that washing fruits, berries, and vegetables in tap water or even purified drinking water is not enough if you want to eat healthy food. Tap water, no matter how clean it is, does not kill bacteria.
"Anything with a skin should be soaked. Foods that grow close to the ground especially need to be soaked, even if you peel the skin before eating it," said jerryjamesstone.
According to him, you should first wash off all obvious contaminants from the food. Put berries, vegetables or fruits in water for at least 15 minutes. After soaking, put the food in a colander or on a clean kitchen towel to dry before putting it in the refrigerator.
The blogger says that in Mexico, a popular method of cleaning food is to use special products made from grapefruit seed extract. The products are also soaked in a solution of vinegar or soda.
Another way to disinfect strawberries in particular is to soak them in wine.
"You can soak strawberries for ten minutes in red wine diluted with two glasses of water. Then rinse the berries to remove all traces of pesticides," the blogger advises.
