Scientists have determined which cat breed lives the longest

Scientists from the Royal Veterinary College in London have studied the life expectancy of different cat breeds and concluded that the Burmese Shorthair cat is a real record holder.

According to their study, these elegant cats live an average of 14 years, far outpacing other breeds. Maine Coons, Ragdolls, and Norwegian Forest cats (10 years) are in second place in terms of life expectancy, and Persian cats (11 years) are in third place, The Telegraph writes.

Unfortunately, sphynxes and Bengal cats have the shortest lives – only 6.5 and 8.5 years, respectively.

A study led by cat expert Dr. Dan O'Neill analyzed data on 8,000 cats that died between 2019 and 2021.

Interestingly, outbred cats, which make up about 88% of all cats, live longer than purebred cats.

Researchers also found that male cats have a shorter life expectancy than females.

What is known about the Burmese cat

The breed was bred in Burma. Cats of this breed resemble Siamese cats in body shape. The Burmese breed was created by crossing Wong Mau cats with Siamese cats with a seal-point coat color.

These cats are medium-sized with well-developed muscles. Burmese cats have thin and short fur that is close to the body. The coat color can have up to 10 shades. The peculiarity of the color is that the lower part of the body is lighter than the back, and the color transition is smooth. The Burmese cat's temperament is affectionate; it constantly needs attention. In addition, cats of this breed are quite noisy.
