A scientific look at love: scientists have found out how people choose their future husbands and wives

A new study has found that people are able to accurately assess their attractiveness and tend to choose partners with similar characteristics. These results were published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.
For thousands of years, people have been meeting, dating, and getting married, but the process of choosing a partner remains mysterious. Recently, scientists have been able to shed some light on this phenomenon.
A team of researchers led by University of Florida psychology professor Gregory Webster analyzed 27 studies involving 1,300 heterosexual couples. The results of this analysis were published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

The study showed that men and women rate their attractiveness well and tend to choose partners with similar self-esteem. For example, men who considered themselves attractive were more likely to choose women who also rated their appearance highly.
The researchers used data where participants rated their physical attractiveness and their photos were shown to strangers for an objective assessment. The first meta-analysis was conducted in 1988, and now it has been repeated using modern methods of analysis. According to Webster, the original data dates back to 1972, but the conclusions remain relevant today.
While some aspects of attractiveness may have changed over time, the basic criteria for beauty remain the same. Scientists have concluded that people objectively assess their attractiveness and choose partners who are "on their level."
The research covered both young people and couples in long-term marriages. It turned out that men in long-term relationships are more accurate in assessing their attractiveness.
