Treasures of Pompeii: archaeologists found a house with mythological scenes on the frescoes (photo)

In the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, archaeologists have found a small house with perfectly preserved frescoes. They illustrate mythological stories.

This house, named the House of Phaedra in honor of the legendary queen of Athens, demonstrates the evolution of architectural styles of the first century AD. The image of Phaedra is depicted on one of the wall frescoes that adorn the house. Reuters writes about it.

In addition to the fresco depicting Phaedra and Hippolytus, who rejected her love, other scenes from mythology were discovered in the house. Among them are a meeting between a satyr and a nymph, as well as images of gods that archaeologists suggest are Venus and Adonis.

In addition to large-scale frescoes, the walls of the House of Phaedra are decorated with smaller, but no less skillfully executed ornaments and scenes depicting natural motifs.

The agency said that Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The layer of volcanic ash that covered the city created a natural preservation effect that has allowed the buildings to be preserved to this day.
