Chinese archaeologists have discovered the oldest known city dating back to the Shang Dynasty and over 3000 years old. The city, located in the Lingnan region, was an important point on the Silk Road. The first analysis indicated that the settlement of Niuluchong originated between the late Neolithic and early Shang dynasties. Further research confirmed that it belonged to the late period of this dynasty.

Numerous artifacts, remains of ancient structures and well-preserved walls were found at the excavation site. According to archaeologist He Anyi, some of the walls are more than a meter high. Interesting Engineering writes about it.

"The northern and western walls of the city are well preserved. The western wall is the best preserved, its height in some places reaches 1.4 meters," He Anyi said.

The archaeologists also found ash pits, traces of support pillars, fragments of ceramics, stone tools, and a probably badly damaged bronze sword, the condition of which does not yet allow for accurate confirmation of the find.

The researchers drew attention to unique ditches that differ from those commonly found in early settlements. This may indicate technological progress or new architectural features of the time.

Excavations are ongoing, and archaeologists hope to find even more artifacts that will shed light on life in the region and the Shang Dynasty (circa 1600-1050 BC), the second oldest dynasty in Chinese history.

Earlier, near Canterbury, archaeologists found a well-preserved elite sword in an Anglo-Saxon cemetery. This rare find, comparable to the swords from Dover and Sutton Hoo, has runic writing on the blade and is considered a model of high craftsmanship.
