Scientists discover ingredients of hallucinogenic mixture in 2200-year-old Egyptian vase

Scientists have recently made a sensational discovery related to the mystical rituals of ancient Egypt. Scientists have discovered a unique vase that may be evidence of an ancient hallucinogenic rite associated with the mythological tale of the god Bes.

A detailed study of the 2,200-year-old archaeological find has revealed fascinating details. Chemical analysis of the organic residues inside the vessel revealed a complex mixture of unique herbal ingredients with powerful psychoactive properties. Among them are wild rue, Egyptian lotus, plants of the Cleome genus, as well as sesame seeds, pine nuts, licorice, and grapes. This was reported in an article published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Scientists suggest that this specific composition could have been used during a mystical ritual associated with the famous Egyptian myth of calming the sky goddess Hathor. According to an ancient legend, the god Bes was able to calm the angry goddess by giving her a special drink that put her into a deep sleep.

Additional research has revealed traces of human bodily fluids, which may indicate that the participants in the ritual directly consumed this mixture. The scientists used the most advanced research methods, including ancient DNA extraction and infrared spectroscopy.

The context of the use of such a drink was associated with the cult of Bes, a deity who took care of childbirth and had a reputation as the patron saint of pregnant women. In the Greco-Roman period, there was a practice of visiting special rooms where women could receive prophecies about the course of pregnancy.

Scientists suggest that the hallucinogenic drink could serve as a tool for receiving mystical visions and prophecies. Women who were in a dangerous period of pregnancy turned to oracles, hoping to be healed.

The unique archaeological find, which is now in the Tampa Museum of Art, was acquired in 1984 from a private collector. Its origin remains unknown, which adds to the mystique of this story and increases the scientific interest of researchers.

This discovery sheds additional light on the complex religious practices of ancient Egypt, demonstrating the depth and versatility of the spiritual life of the ancient civilization.
