Most migratory birds cluster together in wedges during long journeys. They choose a V-shaped formation for their flights to save energy.

Scientists have found that this formation is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also serves an important practical purpose. According to IFLScience, studies have shown that birds flying in a wedge can save up to 20-30% of energy.

This is due to the fact that each subsequent bird uses the upward air currents created by the flapping wings of the bird in front. In this way, the birds reduce air resistance and expend less energy flying.

It is interesting that birds flying in a wedge synchronize their movements. They flap their wings in a certain sequence to make the most of the air currents.

This ability to fly in synchronization was found to develop even in young birds that had not had the opportunity to learn from experienced individuals.

Why the V-shape?

Although the V-shape is the most famous, studies have shown that the J-shape is also common among birds. Scientists believe that the choice of shape depends on the species of bird, its size, and wing length.

Understanding why birds fly in wedges is important for many fields of science. In particular, this knowledge can be used to develop new types of aircraft that are more energy efficient. In addition, this discovery contributes to a deeper understanding of animal behavior and the interaction of living organisms with the environment.

Earlier, scientists found out that elephants organize funerals for their dead babies and mourn them.
