Fighting slugs and snails requires patience and constant effort. However, using environmentally friendly and effective methods, you can effectively control their population and keep your garden healthy and beautiful.

1. Collecting by hand:

  • This is the easiest and most effective method, especially in small areas.
  • It is best to collect slugs and snails at night when they are active.
  • Use a flashlight to find them and collect them in a bucket with soapy water.
  • You can then throw the mollusks in the trash or give them to birds to eat.

2. Beer traps:

  • Slugs and snails are attracted to the smell of beer.
  • Dig shallow containers (e.g. plastic cups) into the ground and pour some beer into them.
  • You can add some yeast to enhance the smell.
  • The slugs and snails will crawl into the trap and die.
  • Check and clean the traps regularly.

3. Barriers:

  • Slugs and snails do not like to crawl over sharp or rough surfaces.
  • Surround your plants with a sprinkling of diatomaceous earth, eggshells, gravel, or crushed shells.
  • You can also use copper tape, which slugs cannot tolerate to the touch.

4. Predators:

  • Encourage the natural enemies of slugs and snails, such as hedgehogs, frogs, lizards, and birds, on your site.
  • Create cozy places for them to live and hide.
  • This will help you control the slug and snail population naturally.

5. Homemade solutions:

  • There are many recipes for homemade solutions that can be used to repel slugs and snails.
  • For example, you can mix water with garlic, chili peppers, vinegar, or ammonia.
  • Spray the solution on the plants and the soil around them.
  • Remember that such solutions should be used with caution to avoid harming the plants.

Important:

  • Do not use chemical pesticides to control slugs and snails, as they can be harmful to the environment and beneficial insects.
  • Collect slugs and snails in the morning when they are less active and more drowsy.
  • Check your plants regularly for signs of damage.
  • Taking timely action will help you protect your garden from these pests.
